A DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check is a background check issued by the UK government. It shows whether a person has any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands, or warnings on their record. For cleaners working in private homes, a DBS check is one of the most powerful trust signals you can display.
Types of DBS check
- Basic DBS check — shows unspent convictions only. Available to anyone, costs £18. Suitable for most domestic cleaning roles.
- Standard DBS check — shows spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and warnings. Required for some regulated roles.
- Enhanced DBS check — includes all of the above plus a check of the barred lists. Required for work with children or vulnerable adults.
For standard domestic cleaning, a Basic DBS check is sufficient and costs £18. Apply at gov.uk/request-copy-criminal-record.
How to get a DBS check as a self-employed cleaner
Self-employed individuals can only apply for a Basic DBS check directly. Standard and Enhanced checks must be applied for through an employer or umbrella body. If you need a Standard or Enhanced check, you can apply through an umbrella body such as Disclosure Scotland or an accredited DBS umbrella organisation.
